La forma animal (ongoing project)
This will be mine and Sofia Esteve's debut feature film, currently in development.
Following our interest around queer historical memory, this time we are approaching it through the lens of fantasy, blending history, Catalan folklore and fable-like storytelling.
As part of the writing and development, we are doing an exhaustive research process regarding both content and form.
We’d like the film to reflect the specificities of a time and place, but also of the popular ways of narrating: oral storytelling, folktales, fables, legends and traditional beliefs.
We are studying how this kinds of literature and popular wisdom generate images, how they are structured and shaped, and their underlying political nature.
We are also retracing queer and queer-adjacent folklore in our territory as part of this documentation.
‘A Silent Tale’
Working along these lines, we’ve edited a fanzine that condensates part of our research, engaging with it in a creative way, and as a form of giving visibility to these lesser known parts of our history and culture.
The fanzine is called ‘A silent tale’.
Here there’s one of my contributions to it, an auca.
Aucas are a genre of a story in pictures specific to Catalonia and Valencia, a form of expression within traditional folk literature.
They resemble comics, but have more rigid rules: the total number of images must be evenly divided by 4, all images are of the same size, all are displayed on the same page, and each vignette has a small piece of text called rodolí at the bottom. This texts are similar to a poem, with rhythm and rhyme.
In this auca I explored different folk stories and beliefs — many of them relating to queer themes — interwaving them through a fable-like tone, and taking inspiration from both religious and traditional iconography and visual imagery.
Late 1950s. Years of dictatorship, persecution of dissidence and vermin hunting.
After a supernatural encounter with a woman werewolf, young Valentina returns home, keeping what happened to herself. But soon, her sheep, overcome with fear at the beast’s presence, stop producing milk – the family’s main source of income.
Lycanthropy, sexuality and spirits that return after death intersect in this genre-bending approach to political memory.
